Well, i've been forced to step away from my computer today where I have been working on getting http://www.naughtyornice.co.uk ready in time for Christmas so that I could consult with the senior Elf council on this business with Madonna.
It's pretty rare that it is not immediately clear whether somebody belongs on the Naughty List or the Nice List, but in this case I have to admit - I am stumped.
There are rational compelling arguments for Madonna to be placed on either list. For example, she is giving 13 month old David Banda a chance at a life that he would never have had. One where he will never have have to worry about where his next meal is coming from, where he will have access to a superb education and comfort beyond the reach of 99.99999999% of the worlds citizens. And most importantly in a famiy where he can be loved and cherished. Lets not forget that Madonna has also pledged a sizable sum of money to help lift other Malawian children out of poverty.
On the other hand there is a suspicion that David's 18month long (for now) interim adoption looks like a shopping trip. Madonna flys in for a couple of days (circumventing adoption rules in the process) and then flys out with a baby under her arm...or rather the arm of one of her bodyguards. Sadly, there are unpleasant echos of baby trading in the whole thing. Still at least its not Mia Farrow doing the adopting otherwise David may have ended up married to Woody Allen!!
There are concerns about whether it is right for David to be placed in a family so far from his home. Often children transplanted from their natural environment suffer with attachment problems. I hope for David's sake that Madonna and Guy Richie have taken that into account.
The Elf council is split right down the middle - 6 for Naughty, 6 for Nice. I have the casting vote.
So here's what we are going to do....I'm going to let you decide whether Madonna belongs on the naughty or the nice list, just leave a comment or simply "naughty" or "nice" and i'll total them up and that will determine how I will cast my vote.
Keep that moral compass pointed at the North Pole!
Santa.
